DAF …or…Dissolved Air Flotation
DAF comes from Meat Processing Plants as they continuously wash the meat they process with water.  By washing the food we eat over and over it is obvious that a significant amount of protein and fat (tiny slivers of meat and fat) goes into the drain with the wash-water.  The wash-water then goes to a treatment plant where the proteins are concentrated and skimmed off of the wastewater discharge.  The removed protein and fat is called DAF.  DAF contains solids that have a high nutritional value, but by the time it is thoroughly mixed with water and floated to the top of DAF tanks nutritional part had been difficult to recover. For years processors have had a problem with trying to dispose of DAF, with some paying as much as $7000 per week or more for removal.  In addition, because of its concentrated nutritional content, it gets rancid quickly, creating some really worrisome exposure for processors to remain in good standing with their neighbors and customers.

VDT has formed an alliance with Alfa Laval, the worlds largest manufacture of oil/protein recovery technology, to produce machines to process DAF on site while it remains fresh.  The machinery used is environmentally friendly, easy to operate and profitable.

The Alfa Laval Three Phase Decanter  Principle of Operation:
Unit consists of a screw inside a shell, driven separately by motors at each end. The shell runs at about 4000 RPM, fast enough to reach about 3500G of force, so the heavy solids are spun to the outside, the lighter water develops a layer next, and the lighter oil layers to the inside.
The screw runs slightly slower so solids are conveyed to the end.
DAF enters the system on the right end, solids come out as you go from right to left, then water, and then oil.
